ANNAPOLIS, Md., June 22 (DC Times Online) — Maryland election officials removed Ian Andre Roberts from the state voter rolls on June 2 after the registration drew scrutiny over whether a noncitizen had remained listed for years, according to state records described in recent reports.
Republican Maryland Delegate Matt Morgan, who chairs the Maryland House Freedom Caucus, said the case shows why “Marylanders have lost faith in our elections.” He said the delay in removing Roberts showed the system was broken and called for audits and reforms.
Reports citing Maryland election records said Roberts had been on the rolls for more than a decade and had been registered twice. The reporting also said absentee ballots were mailed to him, but it did not show whether he actually cast a ballot in Maryland.
The Maryland Freedom Caucus raised the case in public statements and in a letter to election officials. Fox News reported in September that Roberts was listed as an active voter, and in January Morgan said the State Board of Elections was “dropping the ball” as congressional scrutiny continued.
Maryland elections administrator Jared DeMarinis warned in January against “improper cancellation,” a term used for removing eligible voters by mistake. State officials have not publicly explained in the provided reporting why Roberts remained on the rolls until June 2.
